Chandelier Size Guide - How to Choose the Right Chandelier for Your Space

We offer a wide range of chandeliers varying in size, finish, and style. Choosing the right size is not always straightforward — a fixture that's too small gets lost in the room, while one that's too large overwhelms the space. This guide gives you the exact formulas interior designers use to get it right every time.

1. Chandelier diameter — the room size formula

The most widely used rule in interior design: add your room's length and width together in feet. The result in inches is a reliable starting diameter for your chandelier.

The room size formula
Room length (ft) + Room width (ft) = Chandelier diameter (inches)
Example: A 16ft × 12ft room → 16 + 12 = 28 → aim for a chandelier approximately 28 inches in diameter
Diagram showing chandelier diameter formula: room length plus width in feet equals diameter in inches

For rectangular rooms this works for the longest span. For square rooms the formula applies directly. If the result feels too large, go 10–15% smaller — this is a starting point, not a fixed rule.

2. Chandelier height — the ceiling formula

Fixture height (from canopy to lowest point) should scale with ceiling height. This applies to pendant-style chandeliers, not flush-mount ceiling lights.

The ceiling height formula
Ceiling height (ft) × 2.5 = Fixture height (inches)
Example: 10ft ceiling → 10 × 2.5 = 25 inches of fixture height  |  For ceilings 12ft+, use ×3 instead
Diagram showing chandelier height formula: ceiling height in feet times 2.5 equals fixture height in inches

3. Hanging height — clearance rules

Hanging height is the distance from the floor (or tabletop) to the bottom of the fixture — separate from the fixture height itself.

Living rooms & bedrooms
7.5 ft minimum
Floor to fixture bottom. 7ft is the absolute minimum — always err higher in walkable spaces.
Dining tables
30–36 inches
Tabletop to fixture bottom. 32 inches is the sweet spot for most dining rooms.
Kitchen islands
30–36 inches
Counter surface to fixture bottom. Go slightly higher if bar stools are tall.
Foyers & entryways
7.5 ft minimum
From finished floor. High-ceilinged foyers benefit from a dramatic drop length.

4. Dining room & kitchen islands

Size the chandelier based on the furniture itself — not just the room. The chandelier width or diameter should be between half and two-thirds of the table width.

The dining table formula
Chandelier width = ½ to ⅔ of table width  |  Chandelier length = ½ to ⅔ of table length
Example: A 32″ × 66″ table → round chandelier 16″–21″ diameter, or rectangular 16″–21″ wide × 33″–44″ long
Diagram showing correct chandelier proportions above a dining table
Quick rule: The chandelier should be at least 12 inches narrower than the table on each side. A 72″ dining table → chandelier width of 48″–60″. For round tables, the chandelier diameter should be roughly half the table diameter.

For very long tables (over 72 inches), a linear chandelier distributes light evenly and mirrors the table geometry.

5. Staircases & two-storey foyers

Staircase chandeliers are seen from two levels simultaneously, so both perspectives matter when choosing size and hanging height.

From the ground floor
7.5 ft clearance
From the lowest step landing to the bottom of the fixture.
From the upper floor
Eye-level at top
Hang so the chandelier top sits near second-floor eye level — creates a focal point from both levels.
Fixture height rule
2.5–3″ per ft
Allow 2.5–3 inches of chandelier height per foot of ceiling height in double-height spaces.

  • Upper-floor reference: Hang the chandelier slightly below the top of the staircase so the top sits at eye level from the second floor.
  • Architectural centring: Centre independently on a skylight or arched window above the door for best visual impact from outside.
Tip: Always order more cord than you think you need — it's easy to shorten during installation, impossible to lengthen after. All Zenduce chandeliers include adjustable suspension wire.

6. Long hallways

For hallways, chandelier size is determined by width rather than overall room area.

The hallway formula
Hallway width (ft) × 2.5 = Chandelier diameter (inches)
Example: An 8ft wide hallway → 8 × 2.5 = 20 inch chandelier diameter

For multiple chandeliers in a long hallway: centre each fixture across the width, space them 8–10 feet apart, and maintain at least 7.5 feet of floor clearance throughout.

7. Quick reference table

A summary of all sizing rules for quick reference when specifying a project.

Space Diameter / width Fixture height Hanging height
Living room (12×14ft) ~26 inches 25–30 inches 7.5 ft from floor
Dining room (over table) ½–⅔ of table width Scale to ceiling 30–36″ above tabletop
Kitchen island ½–⅔ of island length Scale to ceiling 30–36″ above counter
Bedroom (12×14ft) ~26 inches Match ceiling height 7 ft minimum from floor
Foyer / entryway Room formula 2.5–3″ per ft of ceiling 7.5 ft from floor
Staircase Scale to volume 2.5–3″ per ft of ceiling 7.5 ft from lowest step
Long hallway Width × 2.5 = diameter Scale to ceiling 7.5 ft from floor
